Imagination Library
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is now available in South Euclid & Lyndhurst!
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is a unique early book gifting program that mails a brand new, age-appropriate book to enrolled children every month from birth until five years of age, creating a home library of up to 60 books and instilling a love of books and family reading from an early age.
Dolly Parton's Imagination Library will mail a new book to your home each month.
Benefits of the Imagination LIbrary
(From the Imagination Library)
- This free program can reach children and families from early infancy, allowing enrichment during the critical window of opportunity for language development (the first three years of life).
- Excitement is built up by receiving a book mailed to the child every month.
- That excitement leads to the child asking their caregiver or parent to read.
- The reading routine promotes close, snuggling time for guardian and child (research show benefits of physical affection for children under the age of 4 -- building the part of the brain that promotes long-term memory).
- Introduces families to high-quality books that they might not otherwise find or choose.
- The welcome book and paperbacks have customized tips for optimizing the reading experience.
- Book ownership allows for repeated readings and for a child to re-visit a book repeatedly and independently.
- Promotes exposure to varied vocabulary, concepts, syntax, etc.
- When partners enroll children in the program, the enrollment process implicitly conveys the message that reading regularly to young children is important and offers an opportunity for partners to explicitly convey that message as well as the fact that talking and reading regularly to their child will promote brain development.
- Local Imagination Library program staff connects with families via email, etc. to connect families with helpful information and resources. Every family receives a welcome letter mailing via U.S. mail that includes our bookmark with tips for building young brains and LENA talking tips as well as other information about the program.
- We support our partners by sharing information, as possible, about events they're planning (e.g., close to 5000 families received the recent Starting Point needs assessment survey and over 5000 families received the flyer about Tri-C's Saturday Family Academy).
- We're able to provide parent engagement and support workshops to our families.
- With the introduction of and reliance on technology at earlier ages and new research that shows that experience with real books is more effective at building brains than are screens, this program becomes ever more important.
- It facilitates and almost ensures the other benefits of reading aloud to children from birth and before the start of school – e.g., more words spoken, more conversation between parent and child that benefits brain development, more vocabulary mastered, etc.
Frequently Asked Questions

Q. When will a child receive his/her first book?
A. It generally takes 6-11 weeks from the time of enrollment until the first book is received. For example, if a child is enrolled in February, they will likely receive their first book in April.
Q. When do the books arrive each month?
A. The books generally arrive the third week of the month. Occasionally they will arrive sooner, and during holiday seasons, there may be expected delays. Please remember that they can arrive at any time of the month – even right up to the last day.
Q. In a family with multiple children receiving books, will each child receive their book on the same day?
A. Books will arrive at slightly different times due to varying sizes and weights. We encourage each family to utilize this as an opportunity to create and share in the excitement for each sibling the day their book arrives and have additional chances to be enthused about the arrival of the books. All children receive the same welcome book as the first book and the same last “graduation” book upon their 5th birthday.
Q. What if a family moves?
A. Each book has a label that says “Moving? Call 216-776-6180” so a parent can update their address directly with The Literacy Cooperative. Also, the Imagination Library checks its database against the USPS National Change of Address database monthly, to keep its information as up-to-date and accurate as possible. If a family is moving from one Imagination Library community to another, we will update the information as soon as possible. If they are moving outside an Imagination Library community but within the immediate Cleveland area, they may still be eligible for the program. More distant moves may mean they’re no longer eligible.
Q. What if a child doesn't receive a book or I have other questions?
A. Contact Imagination Library Program Director, Joan Spoerl at jspoerl@literacycooperative.org or 217-776-6186.
